Water Chlorination. Part 2. Searching for solutions in troubled waters -- A worldwide perspective
نویسنده
چکیده
Last week we reviewed the history and current use of chlorination in the treatment of drinking water. Our discussion highlighted a number of potential risks associated with chlorine and some of its reaction products. 1 But what are the alternative methods currently under study for disinfecting public water supplies? Which organizations in the US and abroad are concerned with chlorination and water treatment? In this concluding essay, let’s assess the state of public wasupplies around the world and end by discussing what ISP’s research fronts reveal about the scientific literature related to chlorination.

Determination, Interpretation and Modeling of Chlorination By-products Concentrations in Surface Waters
The formation of chlorination by-products (CBPs) was investigated by bench-scale chlorination experiments with surface waters from different sources in Lesvos island, Greece. The main factors studied were organic matter content of water (expressed as UV-272 absorbance), time and chlorine dose. The CBPs, determined by gas chromatographic techniques, belong to the categories of trihalomethanes (T...

Results Between 27/3/2008 and 3/2/2008, 4 pts in the HO unit developed BC bacteremia. In March 2008, 6 ptes developed chills during haemodialysis (HD), blood cultures didn’t grow BC. At 15/4/ 2008 another patient in HO unit developed bacteraemia by BC. In the HO unit the molecular biology confirmed a clonal outbreak. The crops of antiseptic solutions, soap, tap water, and bottled water showed n...
متن کاملAssessment of Trihalomethane Formation in Chlorinated Raw Waters with Differential UV Spectroscopy Approach
In this study, the changes in UV absorbance of water samples were characterized using defined differential UV spectroscopy (DUV), a novel spectroscopic technique. Chlorination experiments were conducted with water samples from Terkos Lake (TL) and Büyükçekmece Lake (BL) (Istanbul, Turkey). The maximum loss of UV absorbance for chlorinated TL and BL raw water samples was observed at a wavelength...

During recent years, worldwide concern has been focused on the potential for contamination of surface waters and ground waters by agrochemicals in runoff and soil water from irrigated fields. Given this perspective, it is very important to correctly evaluate the levels of different agrochemicals in water, both from human toxicological and environmental viewpoints and to develop management strat...
متن کاملModeling the formation of chlorination by-products in river waters with different quality.
Water chlorination results in formation of a variety of organic compounds, known as chlorination by-products (CBPs), mainly trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Factors affecting their concentrations have been found to be organic matter content of water, pH, temperature, chlorine dose, contact time and bromide concentration, but the mechanisms of their formation are still under i...
